Complement to Create an Angular Harmony

Decision 1: Complement to create an angular harmony

In principle, black, white and gray can be interspersed arbitrarily because they do not influence the angular harmony of the color combination. That's why we can ignore the color white, and instead search for the supplementary color of blue, green, gold and yellow.

  • When adding a further color, we have to consider that this additional color might unintentionally alter the association. This is especially true if the supplementary color is not adjacent to, but complementary to the associated colors.
  • Moreover, we can assume that the probability of an unintended change of the association can be reduced by using the additional color very sparingly and by integrating this color into a component of the web site. Since such a component has an isolating effect and thus represents an "integral whole", the effectiveness and relevance of the new color will be diminished to some extent.
  • And finally we find that the association is less likely to change when a color is added than when a color is removed.

Considering all aspects mentioned above, we could come to the decision to add this new color in order to achieve a color composition with angular harmony, but to use this new color very sparingly so that the effectiveness of the association is impaired as little as possible.
The association is always impaired, however, when the new additional color is complementary to the other colors, even if it is used only sparingly. In that case we have to set the "famous" priorities and make up our mind about what is more important to us: the association or the angular harmony. If we choose the association, it would be better to neglect the angular harmony and to use a color row or repetition instead.

If we choose the angular harmony, we have to find the supplementary color. To do so, we look at the color wheel and firstly arrange the given colors on it. By the way, gold covers the color range between yolk and yellow due to its surface structure (gold has therefore been put in as color sequence):

We see that the counterweight can be found within the range of magenta. There are several ways of creating an angular harmony:

 Solution: possibility No.1

In this first example, magenta has been juxtaposed to green and a blue/violet sequence has been juxtaposed to the yolk/yellow sequence.

 Solution: possibility No.2

The second example shows that a magenta/lilac sequence has been juxtaposed to all other colors. It is also possible to use only the colors magenta and lilac instead of the color sequence:

 solution: possibility No.3

If merely one single color shall be used, magenta and lilac can be replaced:

 Solution: possibility No.4

In this fourth example, we chose a color that can be found halfway between magenta and lilac. So we could create a counterweight to all other colors with just one single color.
